Knowing Your Personal Brand is Essential for True Leadership
Awareness is Key

This time of year always brings reflection, but even more so now, as the 26th marked the third anniversary of my Dad's passing. I honor him with memories, especially those that shaped who I am today.
Growing up, my father would frequently bring up the question of "who do you want to be?" Especially after some issue that I'd have at school with other kids. He'd say things like, "In every group, there is the class clown, the class nerd, the cool guy, the loud and obnoxious guy, the quiet one in the corner, the observant one, the ones that come up with ideas, the ones that follow along. Who do you want to be?" And this would always make me reflect on my actions versus who I wanted to be.
I wouldn't really be able to answer his question, but it left me thinking because his point was that I'd be getting different results based on who I wanted to be. Years later, when I ran for school council and had our public debates, I took this advice and found myself "adjusting" who I wanted to be to get more votes. In the end, I lost the election, coming in at a close second place out of three candidates. I realized there were some parts of my "messaging" that I was not willing to alter in order to get more votes. And this has been a theme in my life; I'm sure it has been the same for yours. Sometimes, staying true to ourselves means making tough choices, even if it means not winning every popularity contest.
It wasn't until years later that I realized my father was essentially talking about personal branding. He was challenging me to define my values and express them authentically, even as a young boy. This early lesson would eventually shape my understanding of how our values, beliefs, and actions work together to create who we are—and how others perceive us.
Not Just Hype: A Personal Brand Matters
Today, "personal branding" is often seen as a tool for self-promotion, a way to "sell yourself" in the world. But what if we reframe it as something deeper, a process of uncovering and expressing our authentic selves?
The word "brand" comes from the Old Norse word "brandr," meaning "to burn." It originally referred to the practice of burning a mark on livestock, usually to signify ownership. Today, branding is still about creating a lasting mark, but instead of burning it on cattle, we're etching it into the minds of those we interact with through our values, beliefs, and actions.
Think about some of the brands you admire. What is it about them that resonates with you? Is it their commitment to quality? Their innovative spirit? Their dedication to social responsibility? These aren't just marketing messages—they're reflections of core values, brought to life through consistent action.
The Tree of Values: Your Personal Brand Foundation
Picture your personal brand as a tree. The roots are your core values—they don't move much, though they do evolve and refine with time, keeping you grounded through life's storms. The trunk and branches are other values important to you and express themselves, flexing and adapting based on circumstances as we move through different stages in life, such as being single, engaged, married, parenthood, or grandparenthood, to name a few. But when you step back and look at this tree over time, its essential nature remains clear and consistent.
A few years ago, this metaphor became very real to me when life delivered multiple challenges at once: shutting down my businesses due to COVID, a cancer diagnosis, losing my father, and becoming a father myself—all within 18 months. While overwhelming at the time, this storm helped me gain crystal clarity about what truly mattered to me and what I wanted to be known for.
But here's the key: when I say "what I want to be known for," I'm not talking about carefully curating an image or worrying about others' interpretations. I'm talking about letting our actions align naturally with our core values, creating a consistent trail that speaks louder than any carefully crafted message could.
For executives and entrepreneurs, a clearly defined personal brand is more than just an advantage—it's a strategic imperative. It's about crafting a compelling narrative that showcases your unique value proposition and sets you apart in a crowded marketplace.
Whether you're seeking career advancement, attracting investors, or building a loyal customer base, a strong personal brand can be the key to unlocking your full potential. And if you're looking for a career change or aiming for that promotion, understanding your personal brand can help you stand out from the crowd and land that dream opportunity
Living Your Brand: Where Values Meet Action
Think of personal branding as the natural outcome of three essential elements working together:
Your core values and purpose—the roots that ground you
Your beliefs and mindset about what's possible
Your focused intentions and actions that bring it all to life
When these elements align, you don't need to "sell" yourself—your authentic self shines through naturally in everything you do. Take Keanu Reeves, for example. He's become known as the action hero who rides the subway, the Hollywood star who exudes humility and kindness. This isn't a calculated image—it's the natural expression of his core values through consistent action.
Life's a Rollercoaster: Hold On to Your Core Values
Life throws us a series of circumstances, and we're constantly evolving, adapting, and re-evaluating our priorities. But navigating this rollercoaster effectively requires a strong understanding of our core selves. This is where personal branding becomes essential—not as a marketing tool, but as a compass that helps us stay true to ourselves while adapting to life's changes.
The beauty of understanding your personal brand is that it gives you a framework for making authentic choices, even in challenging situations. When you're clear about your values and how you want to express them, decisions become simpler (though not always easier). You can evaluate opportunities based on how well they align with your core self, rather than just their surface appeal.
Your Values, Your Voice: The Ultimate Expression
As we approach 2025, I invite you to consider: What lasting mark do you want to leave? How can you align your actions more closely with your core values? The answer to these questions isn't just about creating a personal brand—it's about living authentically and purposefully.
Defining your personal brand is a tool for self-discovery and ultimate expression. It's about understanding who you are at the core, embracing change as part of the whole, and communicating your authentic self to the world. So, take the time to explore your "core personal brand."
